Blog 9- Analysis of 2 film posters

Jennifer's Body

The poster for "Jennifer's Body" is very similar to the DVD cover because "Jennifer" is wearing the exact same clothing and is in the exact same position on the table with the hand sticking out of it; this image conveys the teen horror genre well as it is a teen sitting on top of a severed hand; also the words "she's evil...and not just high school evil" this phrase tells you that something will happen but your not sure what, this is typical of a teen horror because you can normally say roughly what will happen but not be totally wrong or right. This image appears on the DVD cover too but there is blood coming off of it on their. "Body" appears to have been stabbed in the title for the poster; the whole title is in red which has the effect of blood. The poster does not include a certificate rating. This is unusual to see on posters as the majority of posters do have certificate ratings on them. The black board that appears on  the poster DVD cover is also present on the poster; the only difference is that instead of having bloody hand prints on the white board the poster's black board has reviews from various media productions, such as magazines and newspapers. The fact that both the DVD cover and the poster are so similar is a good thing this is because it creates branding and allows the film to be recognised easily. An example of branding would be Nike and their swoosh.

Sorority Row

 Just like "Jennifer's Body" "Sorority Row" also uses the exact same picture for the DVD cover as well as the poster; again this creates branding for the film and helps it be well recognised. the second O in "Sorority" is an ancient Greek letter that is linked to sorority's and sorority's are Greek so using the letter helps the viewers to know that the film is linked with the Greek sorority's and is based upon what they stand for. The image shows that the film is high budgeted as the special effects needed to create a burning house is expensive. The burning house with 6 pretty teenage girls in front is very much part of the teen horror genre this is because teen horrors generally consist of a group of teenage girls and or boys that all get into some kind of trouble together; by having the burning house the viewers know that something is going to burn and that the girls as friends and as individuals are going to be at risk in some form. The phrase "Sisters for life..and death" tells the viewers that death is going to happen throughout the film to the 6 best friends. By having the girls standing in 2 diagonal lines staring down the camera it gives the illusion that they have no clue about the background and shows that they are best friends and that they do everything together.

Blog 8 - Analysis of 2 DVD covers

Jennifer's body
The DVD cover for "Jennifer's Body" has "Jennifer" on the front wearing a short skirt and a low cut top, her top is red which conveys a sexual theme, the way she is sitting and the fact she is staring down the camera shows her confidence. The fact she is sitting on a desk with a hand hanging out of it with blood running down her cheek and bloody hand prints across the blackboard shows the horror side of the cover. The font is bold and has split colours; "Jennifer's" is in white and is eroding at the bottom of some of the letters. "Body" is in red; which resembles blood, all four of these letters look as if there eroding even if it's only a little. The red makes you think of blood with the eroding making you think of a rotting body. The colour red is polysemic as it can mean 2 different things. In the title it can stand for blood whereas the top can be a seductive sexy colour.
The dark green and wood scenes on the cover make the audience think of rotting bodies and evil things.
The blackboard resembles the typical teen horror setting of a school also the darkness of the board resembles death.
Both formal and informal language is being used. The synopsis is formal whereas the other small pieces of writing are informal.

Sorority Row

The DVD cover for "Sorority Row" has the 6 main characters on the front cover. All 6 girls are wearing pretty dresses that show their figures off, the girls are standing in to lines of 3 at the diagonal to the camera. At the back in the middle of the girls there is a fire ball. A house stands behind the girls burning, this makes the cover look like a horror film also it makes the consumer intrigued as to what happens in the film therefore making them want to buy the movie. The main colours used are black which makes the audience think of death and horror scenes. The yellow, orange and red makes the audience think of fire and blood. By the synopsis there are two spears with blood dripping from them both; this was probably done to make the consumer think that they could possibly be some murder weapons used in the film.

Both formal and informal language is being used. The synopsis is formal whereas the other small pieces of writing are informal.

"Sorority Row" is written in white and has a red line underneath it. On the contrasting dark background the title stands out. The title is slightly cracked in places, this adds to the fact that it's a horror movie because it looks abit edgy and eerie.
