Blog 6 - The Script

My script appeals to my target audience of 18-29 year old males because the characters are mainly attractive, scantily clad teenage girls. "She is wearing denim hot pants and a tight fitting pink sparkly top. She has tonnes of make-up on and really high heels. "
My script also appeals to the teen horror lover as it involves a party and somebody being stalked that leads to a practical joke that back fires and ends up with the practical joker being in a sticky situation that ends horrifically for her. "TOBY returns a few minutes later with some rope and gaffer tape.  He starts towards DANIELLE" this quote shows that something is going to happen bad to the main character but it doesn't say exactly what, this makes people want to carry on watching the film so that they know the result of this.
My film is similar to Sorority row because both films start with a house party and then a practical joke goes wrong. The difference is that the practical jokes are completely different and have entirely different outcomes.
The only similarity my film has to Jennifer's body is that they both involve best friends and a relationship, also by casting Meghan Fox in a film it is instantly telling males to watch the film as Meghan Fox is a very attractive actress that 90% of males love.

Blog 5 - evidence of wider reading

''A great horror film, the first and certainly one of the best film versions of any Stephen King novel. Carrie is a strange and satisfying blend of humor, horror, teen angst and melodrama. It's everything a horror fan could ask. '' http://classicfilm.about.com/od/earlysciencefiction/fr/CarrieReview.htm
The reviewer here is stating that ''Carrie" is an all round horror film and that you should see it if you like horror's as it will appeal to anybody who likes the horror genre. This film is a teen horror as it uses teenage characters and is based around a school prom. The reviewer here is saying that it is an all round good film, this helps me whilst I'm thinking about my film as i need to make sure that my script is well rounded and that it really applies to the teen horror fan and uses the typical teen horror things such as school proms and teenagers that are picked on for being different.

"So, out of the seemingly thousands of slasher flicks in existence, I own exactly three: Halloween, it's little cousin Scream, and this, the blessed original A Nightmare on Elm Street. Out of the seemingly thousands of slasher flicks in existence, only these three can have the balls the claim any degree of originality, and the goods to back that claim up." http://chosis.coldfusionvideo.com/nightmare.htm
This reviewer is saying that out of the hundreds of slasher films around the only three he likes are, "Halloween", "Scream" and "A nightmare on elmstreet". His reasoning for this is that they are the only three that dare to be original and can back up there claim to originality. This review is general towards these teen horrors however this helps me to think about my own script as this reviewer says that they like teen horror films that have an original element to them and that their not a fan of films that are the same old style of teen horror.

"Here's the horror-comedy Jennifer's Body in a nutshell: two lifelong friends -- ridiculously hot high school cheerleader Jennifer Check (Megan Fox) and frumpy but devoted Needy Lesnicky (Amanda Seyfried) -- have the ultimate falling out when Jennifer becomes possessed and turns into a man-eating succubus. Jennifer's Body isn't the train wreck that some were probably expecting. It's just another mediocre horror movie about teenagers, and it's neither the best nor the worst of its kind. But it's also not scary enough to work as a horror film, satirical enough to always work as a comedy, or insightful enough to serve as a commentary on teen angst or men's fear of female sexuality. Perhaps the scariest thing about this movie is that it was written by an Oscar winner, Diablo Cody." Read more: http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/101/1019379p1.html#ixzz11ksJTLF2
The reviewer here is saying that the film is ok however he does not think it's scary enough nor funny enough to be classed as a teen horror comedy. This really helps me with my script as i need to make sure that my script fulfills the genre of teen horror and i need to make sure that it is scary enough to pass as a teen horror.

Blog 4 - analysis of opening sequences

Jennifer's body
In the opening sequence there are a few settings that we see. One setting is a mental hospital in which Needy is sitting in a box room that looks slightly padded; it is rather tall with a window high up. The next time Needy is seen she is in the canteen area of the mental hospital screaming and kicking a member of staff. The film then rewinds to the beginning and Needy is in bedroom with her boyfriend getting ready to go to a gig at a bar with Jennifer. Jennifer and Needy then head to a bar which is old looking and is full of people. Jennifer's clothing is typical of a teen horror film that is targeted towards males between 18 and 29.
The film instantly makes you care about Needy & Jennifer and there friendship and what went wrong between them and why Needy is in a mental hospital.

Sorority Row
The first thing you see in this film is a typical teen horror setting, a house party at the college, the party is full of scantily clad teenage girls and there are a few topless guys floating around. Upstairs in one of the rooms the main characters are talking about a practical joke there playing on there friends boyfriend. In another room the girl is laying on the bed looking half dead, her boyfriend is looking worried, she then starts convulsing and foaming at the mouth. There is then a long drive to a deserted area; the long drive creates suspense. The girl who is pretending to be dead then gets stabbed in the lungs, the blood comes pouring out and is very well done as it looks extremely real to the audience.
I think this film appeals to it's target audience very well as it's a typical teen horror and has many scantily clad women in it; this means the target audience which is males between 18 and 29 are well catered for. Instantly you start to care about the 6 girls and 1 of the girls boyfriend. The film also wants you to wonder what happens to the girls body so it draws you so you want to finish watching it.

Both films  are aimed at males between 18 & 29 aswell as being aimed at people who like horror films. The films are aimed at a wide range of people so that they are able to cater to many needs instead of aiming at one kind of group.

Blog 3 - Institutional contexts

Jennifer's body
The budget for this film was $16,000,000
The companies that create this genre  are : -

  • Dune Entertainment
  • Hard C

Sorority row
The budget for this film was $16,000,000

Both of the above films have the same budget which is seen as a standard budget for this type of film; therefore my film will have the same standard budget allowing special effects to be used which will help my film to appeal to a wider audience.

Blog 2 - Target Audience

Jennifer's body = the target audience is males between the ages of 18 and 29. The ratings chart below clearly shows this is true.

Sorority Row = target audience is males between the ages of 18 & 29. the ratings chart below shows this.
Both of the teen horrors above have the same target audience of 18-29 year old males.
To help with my script i am going to do a questionnaire and hand it out to 18-29 year olds and ask them what they want to watch. This will help me as i will have an insight into what my target audience want, this will then help to make my script successful.
